Varramista belonged to the Capponi counts from 1406 until 1953, when Dr. Enrico Piaggio purchased it; and in the '90's it became the favourite residence of his grandson Dr. Giovanni Alberto Agnelli, and of his mother Antonella Bechi Piaggio duchess Visconti di Modrone.
Varramista welcomes you with a striking driveway of oak trees. The current entrance to the Villa whichi dates to 1600; brings you to an Italian style garden designed by Bartolomeo Ammannati consisting of buxus sepmervirens (boxwood) brought to life by two stone fountains. Restructure works were carried out by Pietro Porcinai during the '50's.
The entire park extends over 400 hectares and offers a range of prestigious types of trees. The topiary pruned buxus sempervirens frames the area opposite the Villa, creating large greeen spheres. After walking past and old camellias Japonica and bamboo bushes, one reaches a centuries-old tree which has a six-metre trunk cicumference. Many other centuries-old plants can also be found in the park, including an enormous taxus baccata (yew) that stands alongside a beautiful bay tree tunnel leading to an area beneath an ancient stone bridge.
On the North-West site of the Villa, crossing an avenue of plane-trees bordered by boxwood, one reachs the labyrinth of mixed shrubs and the centuries-old linden tree avenue. Walking along the avenue of plane-trees on the Sounth-East side of the Villa, one reaches the lake covered by a majestic cypress tree an surrounded by a wood full of chestnuts, holm oaks, pines and white firs.
